What are Reel Topics

Reel topics are new tags, similar to Pinterest topic tags, that help Instagram understand what your reel is about so that they can show it to the right audience. This update is part of Instagram’s continued effort to compete with the ever-growing, Tiktok. Everyone knows Tiktok for understanding its users really well, keeping users scrolling for hours! Now, Instagram is doing everything it can to produce the same engagement.

How to Add a Reel Topics

The good news is that this new update won’t require extra work from you when creating content! Instagram made it super simple, by adding a section called “Add Topics” on the same page where you write your reel’s caption.

Once you choose to add topics, you are taken to a screen with a bunch of topics to choose from. Broken into industry categories such as “Fashion & Beauty”, “Animals”, and “Relationships”, you can easily find what topics work for your shop! Here, you can choose the top 3 topics your reel relates to, and you’re all set!

What About Hashtags?

With these new reel topics, you may be wondering how you should handle your hashtag strategy. Well, the Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri, stated that the role of hashtags are to help “understand what the post is about, which means it might be more likely to show up in a place like a hashtag page”. He goes on to explain that Instagram is not using hashtags as a way for posts to get more distribution. Instead Instagram uses them as a way to better understand what the content is providing to the user! This opens up a whole new way of looking at hashtags! It also offers new ways to optimize your content to reach brides!
